The Real Reason You're Not Selling Books
Show Notes Transcript

If you want to sell books, and you're not selling books the chances are you have a poverty, or a thrifty mindset.

It can be hard to accept, but raising the price of you book will help you sell more copies of your book.

some of you may know that i am
0:01
notoriously thrifty
0:04
i would not call myself miserly
0:08
but i am thrifty and
0:10
that's worked for me in my life it's
0:12
helped me to build up a decent reserve
0:14
of money which is how i'm creating this
0:16
podcast and living my current life i
0:19
held on to money i invested in things
0:21
and that turned into passive cash for me
0:25
so i'm a really big believer in being
0:27
smart with money
0:28
but i want to talk about a kind of
0:30
thriftiness that came and bit me in the
0:33
butt and it's coming for you or it's
0:35
already surrounding you and you may not
0:37
even be a thrifty person but you have a
0:40
thrifty mindset
0:42
so that's what we're going to deal with
0:43
today getting your thrifty mindset dead
0:48
and transitioning to an abundance
0:50
mindset
0:52
so i want to talk to you about
0:55
what happened to me because of a certain
0:58
kind of thriftiness and that's that
1:01
we needed a new car we've been in the
1:04
toyota sienna van for the last six years
1:07
uh when we got it it had close to 100
1:10
000 miles on it right now it has closer
1:12
to three hundred thousand miles on it
1:13
transmission is starting to go bad and
1:15
it looks like a war ravaged vehicle
1:19
three children have grown up from
1:21
infancy to
1:22
the ages of ten nine and seven in this
1:25
car
1:26
and so it's predictably coated in
1:29
goldfish powder if you're not familiar
1:31
with the little crackers you know
1:32
goldfish crackers and it's got like
1:35
probably pudding stains and ice cream
1:38
stains
1:39
as well as vomit stains let's be honest
1:42
it's a disgusting car
1:44
and it was starting to leak like fluid
1:47
somewhere in the dashboard and get moldy
1:49
so probably i have like mold growing
1:52
inside my brain right now this car is
1:53
disgusting and my wife was 100 percent
1:58
within her rights to ask for a new car
2:00
but well we don't have a
2:02
any kind of income coming in at the
2:04
moment not much to speak of
2:06
that's what happens when you start a new
2:08
business however
2:10
because i was concerned about it i made
2:12
bad decisions to try to save money and
2:15
find a really good deal instead of
2:17
getting a great value i looked to save
2:21
money and there was a car out there a
2:23
toyota highlander i really like the
2:25
brand toyota because usually the value
2:27
is high but it was underpriced
2:29
significantly underpriced
2:32
so i called the owner and agreed to come
2:35
see the vehicle i knew what was wrong
2:37
with it and i knew that there was a
2:38
chance i knew there was a chance it was
2:40
going to be an extremely expensive
2:42
repair
2:45
guess what
2:47
it was an
2:48
extremely expensive repair i paid twice
2:52
as much for the stupid repairs i did for
2:55
the dumb car i'm not going to get into
2:57
numbers here because everybody feels
2:59
differently about numbers but i will
3:02
tell you i've now overpaid for a car
3:05
that i should never have picked up and
3:08
it's because of my mindset
3:10
instead of understanding the value that
3:13
i was out to get i sought a price
3:17
now what does this have to do with you
3:18
and book marketing and everything that
3:20
you're trying to achieve and changing
3:22
your mindset
3:23
well let me ask you a question are you
3:25
the person right now who self-published
3:27
your book on amazon and listed it as
3:30
free for a week so that you could get a
3:32
bunch of people to come and pick it up
3:33
because man free how can you resist free
3:36
are you the person who has your ebook
3:38
listed at 199 or 99 cents
3:41
or even 299 because well it helps move
3:45
people toward the book
3:47
are you the kind of person who went
3:49
cheapo on editing your book did you go
3:51
cheapo on getting art design for your
3:54
cover and this is all assuming you're
3:55
self-published but even if you
3:57
traditionally published are you the kind
3:58
of person who thinks about the advance
4:00
you got from your publisher
4:02
and you want to either stock it away for
4:04
a rainy day or you want to spend it on a
4:08
down payment for a house or something
4:10
like that instead of pouring it back
4:12
into the book
4:13
if you are
4:14
any of those kind of people
4:16
you're being destroyed by the same
4:19
mindset that screwed me with this stupid
4:22
toyota highlander
4:26
let's talk to the traditionally
4:28
published person first
4:30
if you're holding on to that
4:32
advance on your book
4:35
it's because you don't believe you can
4:37
sell enough copies that you'll recoup
4:39
the money you invest in advertising or
4:42
marketing not all marketing is paid
4:44
marketing but when you have a lump sum
4:47
of money that you could move toward the
4:48
book to get more eyes on it
4:51
you use that money use that money to
4:53
travel use that money to get ads on
4:55
amazon or facebook anywhere
4:58
it's your responsibility and if you
5:00
believe in your book and you have an
5:01
abundance mindset that you can sell a
5:03
million copies of your book
5:06
you'll do the right thing with that
5:07
money
5:07
and
5:08
even if it doesn't return this time
5:10
you'll be so much smarter and so much
5:12
more savvy about how to use the money
5:14
better next time that's the that's the
5:16
deal here okay you're gonna make
5:17
mistakes i guarantee just wave goodbye
5:19
to the money say see you later money
5:21
you're gone
5:22
thank you for teaching me how to do this
5:24
better
5:25
same goes for you if you're a
5:27
self-published author
5:28
if you didn't buy good editing services
5:31
and get a good cover design and art and
5:33
layout and everything you need to make
5:34
it a professional book shame on you not
5:38
shame on you because you're a cheapo
5:40
like i am
5:41
tight wad
5:42
shame on you because you don't believe
5:44
in yourself you don't believe that your
5:46
book is good enough to sell
5:48
and if that's the case why are you even
5:50
out there right now i'd love for you to
5:52
ask yourself that question why are you
5:54
out there trying to get people to read
5:56
your book
5:58
if you don't believe in yourself if you
5:59
don't believe in the book if you don't
6:01
believe you wrote something great
6:04
it doesn't make any sense you're
6:06
behaving
6:07
utterly without logic you're behaving
6:10
without conviction that's no way to live
6:13
stop it
6:15
and if you price your book free so that
6:17
it's going to move
6:19
i'm going to ask you a question if your
6:20
name is not rich hosek and by the way
6:22
you should listen to his podcast or
6:24
check it out on youtube it's really
6:26
amazing i will link to it on the youtube
6:28
podcast here
6:30
and i'll link to it in my show notes on
6:32
the other podcast so anyways
6:34
rich would be the exception to this rule
6:37
i know from speaking with him that he
6:39
will pick up any free book he sees to
6:41
help a person with their metrics but
6:44
if your name's not rich hosek you know
6:46
what you're not doing
6:47
picking up free books if you see
6:49
something scroll down your twitter feed
6:51
you don't be like oh cool i can get it
6:52
for free and get it because you're
6:54
spending time to get the book and you
6:55
know most likely you're not going to
6:56
read it why
6:58
because if it's free it must not be
7:00
worth much
7:01
it must not be a great book if they have
7:02
to give it away it must not be
7:04
interesting if they have to give it away
7:07
we gotta change our mindset collectively
7:09
as authors i wish i had a million
7:10
listeners right now so that they could
7:12
hear that and decide to change
7:14
collectively stop giving your book away
7:16
for free you ever go to the dealership
7:18
like to buy a car we're going back to
7:20
the cars here do you go to the
7:21
dealership and they're like
7:22
well we're just going to give you this
7:24
car okay it's a limited time offer this
7:26
everything on the lot's free so just go
7:28
ahead and take it because we're trying
7:30
to build our
7:32
no and it's not because
7:34
the the the the makes and models have
7:36
been around for so long that they don't
7:38
need to do that stuff
7:39
no not at all
7:41
what's actually happening is that they
7:43
understand there's a great value in
7:44
their product and the people are gonna
7:46
pay the value
7:48
and here's a little secret
7:51
things are overpriced on purpose
7:53
toyota overprices their vehicles they
7:56
make a larger profit on their vehicles
7:58
because of their reputation for value
8:04
brands that can do
8:06
can you
8:08
i feel like that's a tagline brands that
8:10
do can
8:12
do can you i don't even remember how i
8:14
said it i'd go back to the first one
8:16
that was better i liked it anyway
8:20
you
8:20
have an opportunity
8:23
to change your mindset to value your
8:25
book to believe in it and to go out and
8:28
sell it
8:29
so if you have a book right now on
8:30
amazon this is my call to action for you
8:33
right now self-published authors you
8:35
can't do this if you are traditionally
8:37
published because you have no say in
8:38
your pricing if you are the one who
8:41
picks the pricing for your book
8:44
go out and double it right now
8:47
go out and double it
8:49
change the price and double it and then
8:52
go ask people to buy it
8:54
you're not selling any books right now
8:56
anyway i know a lot of you listening
8:59
are not selling any books you're not
9:00
selling one book a week you're not
9:02
selling five books a week you're not
9:04
selling
9:05
so you have nothing to lose literally
9:10
double the price of your book and if
9:12
it's set for free right now i'm gonna
9:14
arbitrarily ask you to put it at 9.99
9:16
for an e-book oh my goodness 9.99 who's
9:20
going to spend 10 bucks on a book
9:23
oh right anybody who likes an author
9:26
will spend ten dollars on a book i spend
9:28
ten dollars on a book regularly and i'm
9:30
a cheap wad i'm a tight wad i go to a
9:32
book sale where i can pick up used
9:34
hardbacks for a quarter
9:37
but if i like the author 10 bucks is
9:40
nothing 10 bucks is a steal if i found a
9:42
stephen king book like he just came out
9:44
with fairy tale i picked that up for 10
9:46
bucks oh my gosh i feel like i had a
9:48
steal
9:51
value what you've done
